A great way to explore Florence is to take a self-guided walk through time using this Historical Florence Walking Tour booklet. It contains pictures and historic details about 37 noteworthy buildings and sites in Florence. A numbered map in the booklet directs your tour which starts at the Museum (#1)located at 201 Florence Avenue across from Steamin’ Joe’s Coffee Shop on US Hwy 2.
The tour guide was developed as a cooperative project between the Florence High School World Geography Class of 2016 and the Florence County Historical Society and made possible by a grant from the Dickinson Community Foundation. Historical Society members have added a few updated photos and additional information to the 2019 edition. Booklets are available for $5 each at the Museum during their Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon summer hours from June 14th through September 14th. They also can be purchased at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center Gift Shop.
Historical Society members offer a few guided walks each summer. The dates for 2019 are:
Thursday, June 27th at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday, July 20th at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday, August 15th at 5:00 p.m.
The guided walk covers about 1.7 miles in the town of Florence and lasts 1 ½ hours. A stop at the Encore on Central provides a brief rest and refreshments. There is no charge for the guided walk, however, donations to the Historical Society are gladly accepted. In case of inclement weather the walks are cancelled.
